| London ‘Ambassador’ To See High School Preparations
An ambassador for the Lord Mayor of Westminster jets in from the United Kingdom next week, (Wednesday 17th September 2003), to help the following high school bands from the United States, in their preparations to participate in a Great British tradition:
Walker Valley High School – Cleveland, Tennessee Douglas S Freeman High School – Richmond, Virginia Atlee High School – Mechanicsville, Virginia Cedar Shoals High School – Athens, Georgia
The renowned group have accepted invitations to perform in London at the turn of the year at the prestigious New Year’s Day Parade.
Robert Bone, Executive Director of The New Year’s Day Parade is bringing messages of goodwill from The Lord Mayor herself – and more than 20 officials holding high office in the Capital.
Mr Bone will present Band Directors with copies of the ancient shield of the city. Only a few exquisite replicas have ever been crafted.
The parade – which regularly attracts more than a million spectators to the streets – lights up London on January 1st each year. More than 10,000 performers, from a dozen nations, make up the biggest event of its kind anywhere in the World.
“I am delighted that these marching bands are taking part.” said Mr Bone, “and the Lord Mayor has asked me to make the trip to see the preparations for myself – and pass on her heartfelt greetings.
“London has an extra special relationship with the USA – now more so than ever – and we can promise all the students, parents and staff a wonderful welcome.”
Organisers of the trip have arranged for a complete cultural experience during the visit – with many opportunities to visit sites of historical interest – and meet young people from many different nations.
